The adult honey bee (Apis mellifera) contains a characteristic set of about 8 bacterial lineages (or species) living within the gut. Each of these 8 species contains multiple strains, even within an individual bee.
The genomes of these organisms are characterized by a combination of metagenomic sequencing from DNA of bacterial cells from bee guts, targeted sequencing of particular loci of interest, and sequences of single cells or of cultured isolates. Samples are from honey bees from different localities, depending on the aims of the subproject.
