Vibrio harveyi. strain BAA-1116 (original designation strain BB120). This strain is an ocean isolate from 1993 and has become a model system for bacterial quorum sensing research. This is the first bacterium shown to communicate using multiple chemical signals (autoinducers). The two chromosome genome of this strain contains a large family of sensor kinases, a single type three secretion system, a super-integron, many insertion sequences and several phage-related and pilus synthesis genes.
