Escherichia coli strain B171. This strain (B171 ; serotype O111:NM) is an enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) and is a member of the EPEC2 subgroup. This strain was provided by Dr. James B. Kaper from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the Center for Vaccine Development. Virulence factors for this strain include the O111:NM serotype, the bundle-forming pilus-encoding plasmid EAF (found in GenBank Accession Number AB024946) and the locus of enterocyte effacement (LEE) pathogenicity island.
