As a complementary effort to the Plasmodium falciparum genome sequence project, the 25 Mb genome of Plasmodium knowlesi has been sequenced using a partial genome shotgun approach at the Sanger Institute. Together with the genome sequences of the malaria parasites P. falciparum, P. yoelii, P. vivax, P. knowlesi and P. chabaudi, the P. knowlesi genomic sequence will provide a deeper insight into the evolutionary history of these species. The combined projects will provide interesting tools for comparative genomics.
