Rhodnius prolixus has been selected for genome sequencing by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) based on multiple criteria acknowledging its potential contribution in advancing biomedical and biological research. As the insect vector for Chagas' disease, sequencing the genome will provide a significant resource for studying the disease and working toward potential biopharmaceuticals for treatment. Additionally, the genome sequence can be utilized in comparative genomics and evolutionary biology studies with other species of the insect world.
