The complete sequence of the Thrips imaginis mitochondrial genome was determined at the University of Queensland, Brisbane. The mitochondrial genome encodes the 37 genes typical of animals, but has extensive gene rearrangements and other unusual features in comparison to other insects. Comparisons to the mitochondrial genomes of other species helped to determine the phylogeny of the orders Thysanoptera and Psocoptera (Shao et al. 2001).
