The University of Lund in Sweden sequenced the mitochondrial genome of Pongo abelii, the Sumatran orangutan, and compared its sequence with that of the Bornean orangutan, Pongo pygmaeus. The Sumatran and Bornean orangutans were previously considered subspecies of the orangutan, Pongo pygmaeus. Comparison of the mitochondrial genome sequences from Sumatran and Bornean orangutans suggests that the two orangutans should be recognized as two different species.
