To test effects of carbon sources on gut microbiota, human fecal samples (independent samples from three men) were cultivated for 24 or 48 h in a minimal medium containing glucose, mucin, or representative GAG (i.e., HA, HP, or chondroitin sulfate C (CSC)) as a sole carbon source.
