The Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Heidelberg str. SL486 whole genome shotgun (WGS) project has the project accession ABEL00000000. This version of the project (01) has the accession number ABEL01000000, and consists of sequences ABEL01000001-ABEL01000048.

In recent years, Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Heidelberg has been the third or fourth most common Salmonella serotype causing disease in the U.S., estimated at 84,000 cases of illness annually. Epidemic outbreaks of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Heidelberg present a significant economic burden to healthcare systems in the United States and elsewhere, although studies have failed to elucidate the genetic factors of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Heidelberg that make it a particularly virulent serovar. The recent rise in Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Heidelberg in the United States is accompanied by a concomitant increase in antimicrobial resistance. Annotation was added to the contigs in September 2008.
