Comments and References:

A. punctata = A. caviae = A. punctata subsp. caviae
A. punctata, A. caviae, and A. punctata subsp. caviae are homotypic synonyms by the rules of the Bacteriological Code. However, this stems from the incorrect designation of the type strain for A. punctata as ATCC 15468 in Skerman et al. (1980). The correct strain is NCMB 74 (= ATCC 23309) (Martin-Carnahan and Joseph 2005b). However, this is the same type strain as Aeromonas eucrenophila. The Subcommittee on the Taxonomy of Vibrionaceae (1989, 1992, 1998, 1999) has considered that a request should be made to the Judicial Commission to correct the type strain of Aeromonas punctata. In Judicial Opinion 123, the Judicial Commission ruled A. punctata to be nomen ambiguum and consequently place A. punctata and corresponding subspecies names on the list of rejected names.
