Per the study by Grassle and Grassle (1976), Capitella capitata (Fabricius, 1780) is a sibling species complex. The authors did not formally describe the member species within this complex, but referred to them as Capitella sp. I, Ia, II, IIa, III, and IIIa. Such a nomenclature system has been adopted by various researchers in later studies. Currently, it is not verified which one or more of these unpublished sibling species should be associated with the species name Capitella capitata.
