A novel actinomycete, designated strain RP-AC33T, was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of a plant collected in Mara Island of Jeju, Republic of Korea. The substrate mycelium of the novel strain was non-fragmenting and vivid to strong yellow-orange in colour. Aerial mycelium was absent on most media. The presence of characteristic sporangia was found. A phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences represented that the isolate belongs to the genus Actinoplanes of the family Micromonosporaceae and were moderately related to Actinoplanes globisporus (97.5%). meso-Diaminopimelic acid is the diagnostic diamino acid and arabinose and xylose were characteristic sugars in whole-cell hydrolyzates. The major respiratory quinones were MK-9(H4) and MK-9(H6). The G+C content of the DNA was 67.1 mol%. The physiological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data showed that the isolate should be assigned as a member of a new species of the genus Actinoplanes. The name Actinoplanes subtropicus sp. nov., with type strain RP-AC33T (= DSM 45194T = NRRL B-24665T), is proposed.
