ICTV "sensu lato" species
The ICTV maintains the official version of the nomenclature and classification of the viruses - each viral family is curated by a separate study group. The viral nomenclature includes names at the species level (printed in italic type) and a set of taxa below the species level (printed in Roman type) that are loosely termed 'isolates'. For example, the T-even phages (which include phages T2, T4, T6 and several other 'isolates') are classified as a single species in the ICTV. Unfortunately, in many cases the ICTV have chosen to use the same names at both the species and the 'isolate' level, with italic font being the only distinguising feature. In many cases this means that the same name is used to mean two very different things -- "Enterobacteria phage T4" in Roman font is the traditional phage T4, while "Enterobacteria phage T4" in italic font is the species of T-even phages, which includes phage T2, phage T4, phage T6 and others. We cannot use typeface to distinguish between names that mean different things in GenBank entries (or in the taxonomy database). In these cases, we have chosen to append "sensu lato" to the species-level names -- the species of T-even phages will be named "Enterobacteria phage T4 sensu lato" in our database, and "Enterobacteria phage T4" will denote phage T4 in the more limited sense. This situation is far from ideal, but we believe that this solution will be the least disruptive overall.
