Humulus scandens E. Small in Flora of North America notes that Merrill (1935) considered Humulus scandens (Lour.) Merr. to be a synonym of H. japonicus Siebold & Zucc. However, Small (1978) considers the name of uncertain application, because the description by Loureiro does not resemble that of H. japonicus. H. scandens is not treated as a synonym of H. japonicus in the Flora of North America.
