Brachyscome

The spelling 'Brachyscome' was used by Cassini in the protologue of 1815 but was subsequently changed by him to 'Brachycome', treating the original spelling as an orthographic error. Although subsequently 'Brachycome' was widely used, the original spelling 'Brachysome' has more recently become widely adopted in the Australian literature (see, e.g., Short 1988). Two attempts to conserve the spelling 'Brachycome' (Adolphi & Johnson 1989; Hind & Jeffrey 1988) have failed, on the grounds that it is not necessary to conserve an orthographic change made under Article 60.1 (Brummitt 1993). The Committee on Spermatophyta recommends that the original spelling 'Brachyscome' be retained (Brummitt 1993).
