Viral matrix protein M2 Is a viral transmembrane protein which forms a proton-selective ion channel that is needed for the efficient release of the viral genome during virus entry. Once is attached to the cell surface, the virion enters the cells by endocytosis. Acidification of the endosome triggers M2 ion channel activity. Also plays a role in viral proteins secretory pathways. Elevates the intravesicular pH of normally acidic compartments, such as trans-Golgi network. It seems that M2 protein ion channel activity can affect the status of the conformational form of cleaved HA during intracellular transport.
