This family of proteins with unknown function appears to be restricted to Proteobacteria. Recently, it was proposed that members of this family along with members of DUF943 (pfam06092) should be recognised as a putative toxin-antitoxin pair in which DUF3289 is a homolog of Colicin M and DUF943 (pfam06092) acts as its cognate immunity protein.
