Lantibiotic streptin immunity protein
Streptococcal species produce a lantibiotic, streptin, in a similar manner to the production of nisin and subtilin by other lactic acid bacteria, in order to compete against competing bacteria within the environment. The immunity protein protects the bacterium from destruction by its own lantibiotic. In general, there is little homology between the immunity proteins of different genera of bacteria.
