FliO is an essential component of the flagellum-specific protein export apparatus. It is an integral membrane protein that acts as an assembly chaperone for the flagellar protein FliP (pfam00813). It is crucial, although not strictly required, for efficient FliP assembly and, thus flagellar assembly and function.
