ferritin-like diiron-binding domain found in Methanocaldococcus jannaschii hypothetical protein MJ0754 and similar proteins
MJ0754-like proteins are uncharacterized members of the ferritin-like diiron-carboxylate protein superfamily found in bacteria and archaea. They contain a conserved ferritin-like four-helix bundle predicted to coordinate a dinuclear non-heme iron center. The family is represented by the Methanocaldococcus jannaschii hypothetical protein MJ0754 and homologous proteins from other bacteria and archaea. Although their physiological function remains unknown, the conserved ferritin-like fold and metal-binding architecture suggest a role in redox chemistry or oxidative stress responses.
