This protein was identified by the partial phylogenetic profiling algorithm () as part of the system for cellulose biosynthesis in bacteria, and in fact is found in cellulose biosynthesis gene regions. The protein was designated YhjU in Salmonella enteritidis, where disruption of its gene disrupts cellulose biosynthesis and biofilm formation ().
