This model describes the conserved core region of the beta subunit of voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels in animals. Amino-terminal regions differ substantially, in part by alternative splicing, and are not included in the model. Four beta subunits form a complex with four alpha subunit cytoplasmic (T1) regions, and the structure of the complex is solved. The beta subunit belongs to a family of NAD(P)H-dependent aldo-keto reductases, binds NADPH, and couples voltage-gated channel activity to the redox potential of the cell. Plant beta subunits and their closely related bacterial homologs (in Deinococcus radiudurans, Xylella fastidiosa, etc.) appear more closely related to each other than to animal forms. However, the bacterial species lack convincing counterparts the Kv alpha subunit and the Kv beta homolog may serve as an enzyme. Cutoffs are set for this model such that yeast and plant forms and bacterial close homologs score between trusted and noise cutoffs.
