variant-type mycofactocin precursor Mycofactocin is a enzyme cofactor derived from the C-terminal amino acid pair, usually Val-Tyr, of the RiPP precursor peptide MftA. A rare variant form of MftA, with differences from the consensus for several key amino acids in the last ten, occurs in Deltaproteobacteria. The most notable amino acid replacement, true for all members of the seed alignment, although not necessarily for all members of this branch of the MftA family, is Ile replacing Val in the terminal dipeptide destined to become part of the mature cofactor. The variant form tends to co-occur with a variant, somewhat shorter form of the radical SAM maturase enzyme MftC.
