alpha-1/alpha-2 family phenol-soluble modulin Members of this family are extremely short proteins, about 21 amino acids long, that are known to retain an N-formyl-methionine (fMet) at the N-terminus. These proteins, phenol-soluble modulins of the alpha class, including alpha-1 and alpha-2 from Staphylococcus aureus, are exported by an ABC transporter, and affect the state of the host immune system in a number of ways.
