Adventures in Pathogen Discovery
Advances in nucleic acid diagnostic methods are enabling rapid, sensitive microbial surveillance and differential diagnosis of acute infectious diseases and new insights into links between infection and chronic diseases. I will discuss mechanisms of microbial pathogenesis, complexities in proving causation, and a staged strategy for surveillance and discovery. In reviewing the strengths and limitations of various platforms, I will provide examples that illustrate how each platform can be used to investigate clinical problems. Lastly, I will lay out a crude blueprint for future work.
