Crocosphaera watsonii WH 8501 |
 |
Crocosphaera watsonii. Crocosphaera watsonii is a unicellular marine cyanobacterium that fixes nitrogen, presumably at night, while growing photosynthetically during the day. It is abundant in the marine environment and contributes significantly to global carbon and nitrogen biogeochemical cycles. Crocosphaera watsonii WH 8501. Crocosphaera watsonii WH 8501, formerly Synechocystis sp. WH 8501, was isolated from the tropical southern Atlantic Ocean. This organism is able to efficiently transport phosphorus which may play an important role in its ability to survive in the oligotrophic tropical ocean.
