A hospital for all seasons.

Abstract

Seasonal variations in occupancy, cash flow, staffing patterns, and emergency department activity are familiar to any hospital, but institutions located in seasonal resort areas must cope with more extreme variations than do most hospitals. Mount Desert Island Hospital, Bar Harbor, ME, has developed several innovative means of handling slack periods in wintertime and intense activity in the summer.
