Regional Cerebral Blood Flow SPECT for detection of Frontotemporal dementia in people with suspected dementia

This review focused on one type of dementia, frontotemporal dementia (FTD). This neurodegenerative disease affects the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain and accounts for up to 16% of all degenerative dementias. People who have this disease may develop changes in their behaviour, speech or ability to plan. It is important to identify people with FTD correctly as the disease course and response to treatment differs from other dementias such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Beta‐blockers for hypertension

Beta‐blockers are not recommended as first line treatment for hypertension as compared to placebo due to their modest effect on stroke and no significant reduction in mortality or coronary heart disease. We asked whether this class of drugs was as good as other classes in preventing death, stroke and heart attacks associated with elevated blood pressure. Thirteen randomised controlled trials suggested that first‐line beta‐blockers for elevated blood pressure were not as good at decreasing mortality and morbidity as other classes of drugs: diuretics, calcium channel blockers, and renin angiotensin system inhibitors.

Adrenergic drugs for urinary incontinence in adults

Urinary incontinence is the leakage of urine, and when caused by coughing or exercising it is called stress incontinence. It may be caused by damage to muscles either holding up the bladder or holding the bladder neck closed. Adrenergic agonist drugs may help the bladder neck muscle to contract more strongly. This review of 22 trials involving 673 women and seven different adrenergic drugs found weak evidence that adrenergic agonists may help stress urinary incontinence. Side effects do occur but are usually minor. Rarely, more serious adverse effects such as high blood pressure can occur. More evidence is needed to compare adrenergic drugs with other drugs for stress incontinence and also with pelvic floor muscle exercises.

Better survival and reduced distant recurrence rate with combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy for cervical cancer

Evidence suggests giving chemotherapy and radiotherapy together improves overall survival, whether or not cisplatin was used. The effect appeared to be greater in trials including a high proportion of patients with early stage disease. Combined chemotherapy/radiotherapy also delayed tumour recurrence and reduced the risk of re‐growth near the original cancer site as well as in other parts of the body. There was an increase in side‐effects, principally affecting the blood and bowel, but these generally only lasted a short time. Long‐term effects were poorly reported.

Flexible working conditions and their effects on employee health and wellbeing

Self‐scheduling of shift interventions and employee controlled partial/early retirement were found to improve health (including systolic blood pressure and heart rate; tiredness; mental health, sleep duration, sleep quality and alertness; and self‐rated health status) and/or wellbeing (co‐workers' social support and sense of community) and no ill health effects were observed.
