Airway-stabilizing effect of long-acting beta2-agonists as add-on therapy to inhaled corticosteroids

This review assessed the bronchoprotective effects of salmeterol or formeterol in patients with asthma who were using corticosteroid inhalers. The authors concluded that the beta2-agonists improved bronchoprotection compared with placebo. The evidence presented appears to support the authors' conclusions, but it is difficult to assess the generalisability of the results and the clinical importance of the findings is unknown.

Meta-analysis: effect of long-acting beta-agonists on severe asthma exacerbations and asthma-related deaths

This generally well-conducted review concluded that long-acting beta-agonists increased severe and life-threatening asthma exacerbations, as well as asthma-related deaths. However, the potential for selection bias, and the potential impact of high drop-out rates on the results seen in some studies, should be kept in mind when considering the conclusions of the review.
