Literature Search Strategies

Figure 4 is a flow chart that summarizes the search and selection of articles. There were 17,369 citations identified by searching MEDLINE, PsycInfo, Cochrane Center Register of Controlled Trials, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. An additional 257 citations were identified from outside sources, such as reference lists and suggestions from peer reviewers. After duplicates were removed, 12,766 unique citations were screened at the title/abstract stage. The full text of 277 citations were examined for inclusion for one or more of the four Key Questions. The following number of articles were included for Key Question 1 (n=11), Key Question 2 (n=6), Key Question 3 (n=82), and Key Question 4 (n=55). Reasons for excluding the other articles are available in Appendix D.
