Safe and Effective Anticoagulation in the Outpatient Setting: A Systematic Review of the Evidence [Internet]

Evidence-based Synthesis Program - Department of Veterans Affairs (US)

Version: February 2011

DISCUSSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The literature available to address this question is limited. We were able to identify 11 studies, of which only 3 were RCTs.,, Except for one study, major clinical outcomes occurred more frequently in the control than the intervention group (Table 3). However, pooled results from the 3 RCTS showed no significant differences between ACC and UC for deaths, thromboembolic events, or major bleeding. Pooling of the observational studies' results was not possible due to heterogeneity among studies in reported outcome metrics.
