The extraoral and intraoral examination should be part of the clinician's examination process. During the extraoral portion, it is necessary to assess skin moles that may be present in the head/neck region or on other accessible skin areas. This review paper is a discussion of melanoma and provides information on evaluation of moles to determine need for referral.
