Your next patient does not speak English: translation and interpretation in today's busy office.
Pediatric Teaching Faculty, Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, San Diego, California, USA.
Today's advanced practice nurse needs to know the pitfalls, problems, and risks that can occur when providing health care to patients who come from a different culture and who speak a different language. When appropriate translation and interpretation services are available there is an increased likelihood of patient compliance, solid patient-provider relationships, and improved patient outcomes. Even though the research indicates that a professional translator is needed, excellent care is possible using nonprofessional translators if the advanced practice nurse understands what needs to be done to facilitate communication and can assess when effective communication is not occurring.
