Central serous chorioretinopathy complicating systemic corticosteroid therapy

Eur J Ophthalmol. 1997 Jul-Sep;7(3):297-300. doi: 10.1177/112067219700700317.

Abstract

Purpose: To present evidence that systemic corticosteroid therapy may cause central serous chorioretinopathy.

Methods: A 20-year-old male with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura was examined during systemic treatment with corticosteroids (100 mg daily).

Results: The patient had central serous chorioretinopathy. Spontaneous recovery accompanied discontinuation of the steroid treatment.

Conclusions: This case provides further evidence that cortisol may play a role in the development of central serous chorioretinopathy.
