Saying hello again: a new approach to bereavement counseling.

    Abstract

It is generally accepted that the successful resolution of grief work is to say goodbye to the deceased. Yet many bereaved resist this therapeutic agenda, reluctant to relinquish the love object. By examining the aspects of the relationship which the bereaved is reluctant to forfeit, grief work can become an opportunity for the bereaved to incorporate the lost relationship into the present and future. The griever is encouraged to say 'hello' again to those aspects that were expressed in the lost relationship thus gaining greater personal integration and wholeness.
