    Abstract

With the recent exponential increase in our knowledge of human genes it is opportune to assess the impact this information will make on current clinical practice. In this review particular attention is paid to the advances being made in diagnostic techniques and to the possibilities for improved forms of treatment, particularly the use of recombinant gene products and somatic gene therapy.
