Bullous eruptions of the skin arise from a vast array of underlying pathologies. Blisters appear most commonly secondary to mechanical or infectious causes. Although rare, autoimmune mechanisms, inborn errors in metabolism, and drug sensitivity reactions can give rise to very large bullae and create potentially life-threatening emergencies. This article presents an overview of the causes of blisters, clinical recognition, and various treatment options.
