Am J Obstet Gynecol. 1971 Nov 1;111(5):725-7. doi: 10.1016/0002-9378(71)90982-3.

Abstract

PIP: The purpose of this report is to relate a university professor's ideas about the interrelationships of various parties involved in the delivery of health care. The specific case of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Gainesville which in conjunction with the State of Florida Division of Health implemented a program involving the delivery of female health care in 13 rural counties is documented. The idea was to develop 6 different models in 6 different parts of the state and in time see which ones were most appropriate for that particular state. Medical professionals involved in health care were utilized and outreach workers were also trained. The department started to function as a coordinator of all family planning and it concerned itself with evaluation. The author feels that it is important for the academician to leave the "ivory tower" and start encountering all sorts of groups and be a part of such a practical community oriented project.
