Recent findings on antifertility agents found in plants are reviewed. More than 40 species of plants have been identified that produce substances with estrogenic properties. The chemical structures of 12 such nonsteroidal estrogens are presented in a table. The antifertility effect of some of these substances has already been established in cattle. Other plants not possessing estrogenic properties have been tested for their antifertility effects with some positive results, but there was evidence of toxicity in all cases. There is cause for scepticism that either type of plant compound will be useful in human contraception.
