Probing the temporal world of the elderly

Int J Nurs Stud. 1987;24(3):201-14. doi: 10.1016/0020-7489(87)90003-4.

Abstract

This paper reviews the literature on subjective time experience, especially as it relates to the elderly; comments on the problems associated with measuring such experience; describes a study to explore temporality in older women; provides speculations concerning the meaning and impact of time on the life and health of the aged; and notes nursing implications. Findings from the study of elderly women suggest that successful aging may be linked to a feeling of timelessness, and furthermore, that a search for the meaning of temporality in old age may add to an understanding of physical and mental health, well-being and longevity.
