Eight cases of chronic dislocation treated by bilateral reductions of the articular eminence have been reviewed. The technique has been found useful when indicated. Good surgical technique with meticulous attention to detail is required. The entire eminence must be removed and the surface left smooth. As with any TMJ disorder or surgery, concomitant local and systemic problems are common and must be considered in preoperative and postoperative evaluations. Patients should be observed for at least two years after surgery for recurrence of any TMJ disorder.
