Trends Cogn Sci. 2015 Aug;19(8):424-6. doi: 10.1016/j.tics.2015.05.008. Epub 2015 Jun 16.

Abstract

Studies of so-called 'extreme environments' have contributed greatly to our understanding of the effects of early adversity on development. In this article I describe ongoing work in low- and middle-income countries that is designed to shed light on how early adversity becomes biologically embedded, and I discuss the potential implications for public policy.

Keywords: adversity; brain; development; neglect; toxic stress.
