The formation of rhinophyma is due to hyperplasia and hypertrophia of the sebaceous glands of the nose and represents the final stage of rosacea. The associated fibrosis can only be reduced by surgical procedures. Thus the therapy of choise is surgical excision completed by dermabrasion. From 1977 to 1985, 23 patients with rhinophyma were treated in this way at our clinic.
