Abstract

This article, which forms part of the life sciences series, explores the function of the immune system. It is important that nurses understand how the immune system works and its role in the prevention of infection. Innate and adaptive immunity are described and the differences between these two types of immune response are discussed. The acquisition and development of a competent immune system are also explored.
