    Abstract

Oxygen-dependent mechanisms for intracellular killing by leukocytes result in the generation of highly reactive oxygen metabolites. These are called oxygen radicals. The purpose of this article is to define the oxygen free radical and the methods by which it is generated as well as the mechanisms by which these radicals produce injury. Specifically, recent studies investigating the role of oxygen-derived free radicals in wound healing are reviewed.
