    Abstract

The biologic, ethical, and social obstacles in AIDS vaccine development are explored. Current understanding of the immunodeterminants of HIV-1 pathogenesis is reviewed and ideal biological properties for an AIDS vaccine are proposed. Options for clinical trial design, criteria for entry into clinical trials, and provision for care of volunteers who experience vaccine-associated adversity are discussed.
