Excerpt

This Statistical Brief presents data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) on the rates of risk-adjusted inpatient mortality across subpopulations for the years 2000 and 2007. For this Statistical Brief, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)’s Inpatient Quality Indicators (IQIs) are used to develop risk-adjusted in-hospital death rates among adults for four relatively frequent hospital conditions (acute myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, pneumonia, and stroke). Risk-adjusted mortality rates are evaluated for the years 1994, 1997, and 2000 through 2007. All differences between estimates noted in the text are statistically significant at the 0.05 level or better.
