Localization of miR-21 in colorectal cancers. Tissue sections from colon (b, d, f) and rectal (a, c, e) cancer samples were incubated with a full length DIG-labeled LNA probe to miR-21. Strong miR-21 signal is observed in the stromal compartment (St), predominantly in fibroblast-like cells (a, b, black arrows) in both colon (b) and rectal (a) cancers. Occasional small clusters of cancer cells are seen within central areas of colon and rectal cancers (b, d, white arrows) as well as at the invasive front (c, arrows). Weak miR-21 ISH signal is observed in the nearby smooth muscle cells of muscularis externa (indicated by mu in e). In normal mucosa in proximity to the cancer, a weak ISH signal is seen in a population of lymphocytic cells (f, arrows) located in lamina propria (Lp). Bars: a, b, e: 40 μm, c, d, f: 20 μm
