[Use of honey in conservative treatment of senile cataracts].

    [Article in Russian]

    Abstract

Instillations of 25, 33, or 50 percent aqueous solutions of flower honey in combs were administered to patients with developing senile cortical cataracts. 1-2 three-month courses of honey instillations into the conjunctival sac were carried out annually. The rest time the patients were administered three-month courses of vitamin drops or vicein. A total of 108 patients (202 eyes) were followed up for 2 to 15 years (7 years on an average). Visual acuity of at least 0.1 was preserved in 95.5 percent of eyes, in 55.9 percent of these it did not get worse over the course of follow-up, whereas it was preserved in but 35.3 percent of the controls.
