This article reviews the selection criteria for surgical treatment of patients with liver metastasis as well as the criteria for selection of the type of hepatic resection. Prognostic factors for the long-term survival and recurrence of the liver metastases after hepatic resection are discussed. A brief review on the alternative methods in the treatment of liver metastases alone or in combination with the hepatic resection that extend the possibility of liver surgery to patients with primary irresectable tumors and inprove the long-term survival are described.
